That practice seems to have continued until the railroads became the major means of transporting goods and people. From that time on sites along the railroad tracks were chosen, averaging between eight and ten miles between towns. Factors such as the topography of the land usually helped to determine sites. General Thomas L. Rosser, railroad construction engineer, located most of the stations in North Dakota and gave them names. The Northern Pacific line reached Bismarck on June 3, 1873. A year of financial disaster for many, including the railroads. It was six years before the railroads were again in a position to resume construction west of Mandan.
